1861 United States 15 Cents Fractional Currency (BAN552-)

Obverse: Allegorical portrait of Columbia (Liberty) wearing a laurel wreath on the left. Large red overprint with the words “United States” across the center. Denomination shown as “15” in an ornate frame on the right, and also written as “Fifteen Cents.” Lettering: “ACT APPROVED MARCH 3RD 1863” – “FURNISHED ONLY BY THE ASSISTANT TREASURERS AND DESIGNATED DEPOSITARIES OF THE UNITED STATES.”
Reverse: Printed in green ink with large “15” numerals on both sides. Lettering: “Exchangeable for United States Notes by Assistant Treasurers & designated Depositaries of the United States in sums not less than Three Dollars. Receivable in payment of all dues to the United States less than Five Dollars, except Customs.”
