DIGITAL SHAMANISM: Hybrid Design, Creativity and Holistic Interaction with Machines

How could creativity and technology open a channel to expanded perception and inner freedom?

Digital Shamanism examines how the digital age shapes perception, identity and inner life, and how creative engagement with technology can open a space for exploration, attention and a sense of subtle presence. The book brings together human–computer interaction, design, mysticism and consciousness work, showing how digital tools can take part in meaning rather than distance us from it.

Drawing on research and original projects developed at MIT and the Hebrew University, Prof. Amit Raphael Zoran presents the ideas, interpretations and cultural conditions that inform his creative practice. The text considers how computational systems, crafted objects and aesthetic experimentation participate in experience and influence how we sense and understand the world.

Through design research, reflective writing and measured connections to shamanic practices, the book reframes technology as a companion in perception and creative inquiry. Visual material, QR-linked resources and concise chapter summaries support engagement while maintaining clarity and rigor.

Readers will encounter:

A grounded way of engaging with technology in a climate of acceleration and fragmentation
Observations on how digital systems inform perception, embodiment and connection
A human-centered perspective on hybrid practices in design and interaction
An approach that supports clarity, attention and expanded perception

Digital Shamanism offers a way of living with technology that feels attentive, connected and alive. It speaks to readers across disciplines who recognize that innovation, creative practice and human experience can develop together.
