The GST (Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik) was a paramilitary organization in East Germany focusing on pre-military training, sports, and technical education. A GST-related military medal labeled "Play" likely refers to awards given within this organization for achievements in training, competitions, or service. The GST played a role in preparing youth for conscription and fostering skills aligned with socialist state priorities. Medals from this context reflect East German state practices and propaganda aimed at cultivating disciplined and capable citizens. Collectors of Cold War memorabilia find GST medals significant as representations of GDR social and military history.
