Kings of Macedonia. Alexander IV (323–309 BC). Æ Half Unit (No reserve price)
Alexander IV was the son of Alexander the Great and Roxana, born shortly before his father’s death in 323 BC. As a child king, he ruled in name from 323 until approximately 309 BC under the regency of others, as political rivals fought for real power. The Æ (bronze) Half Unit coin minted during his nominal reign symbolizes his contested sovereignty in a fracturing Macedonian empire. Ancient coins issued under Alexander IV often bear the name or iconography attributed to Alexander the Great, emphasizing dynastic succession despite the young king's inability to exercise direct control. This period is critical in ancient history as it illustrates the decline of Alexander’s unified empire and the rise of Hellenistic kingdoms. Coins of Alexander IV, especially ones in smaller bronze denominations, are valuable for understanding the political propaganda as well as the local economic conditions of early Hellenistic Macedonia.
