An original slice of hip-hop history — The Breaks by Kurtis Blow was one of the very first rap singles to achieve mainstream success. Released in 1980 on Mercury, this funk-fuelled classic laid the foundation for the genre’s crossover appeal, fusing rhythmic spoken word with infectious breakbeats and basslines.
💡 Fact: The Breaks was the first certified gold rap single in history, helping to propel hip-hop from New York’s block parties into the global music spotlight.
