Vase - Stoneware, Cylindrical Figural Vase with Townspeople Scenes, Golden Clouds and Sea Bream, Original Tomobako - Japan (No reserve price)

This cylindrical stoneware vase exemplifies traditional Japanese pottery that often incorporates narrative scenes and symbolic motifs. The depiction of townspeople scenes reflects a historical interest in daily life and communal activities, while decorative elements like golden clouds and sea bream (tai) connect to auspicious symbolism in Japan: golden clouds denote good fortune and sea bream is associated with celebrations. Stoneware vases are appreciated for their durability, varied glazing techniques, and suitability for both practical use and artistic expression. Often accompanied by an original tomobako (signature wooden box), such pieces underscore the cultural emphasis on presentation and provenance in Japanese ceramic art. The vase thus represents a harmonious blend of form, function, and symbolic storytelling rooted in Japanese tradition.
