This Vintage Ethiopian Carved Cup is a masterful example of East African functional art, hand-hewn from a single piece of indigenous hardwood. Historically used for serving traditional beverages like tej (honey wine) or coffee, this vessel carries the warmth and character of many years of communal use.
Artisanal Design & Detail
The cup features a robust, rounded body supported by a tapered pedestal base, a silhouette that is both stable and elegant. The exterior is adorned with intricate geometric engravings that reflect the rich decorative traditions of the Ethiopian highlands.
- Zonal Carvings: The body is divided by horizontal bands, with the central section featuring rhythmic, vertical and diagonal hatched lines that create a textured, non-slip grip.
- Organic Patina: The wood has aged to a deep, multi-tonal ebony and burnt-umber finish, showing a beautiful natural luster from handling.
- Unique Silhouette: Unlike mass-produced items, this cup retains a slight asymmetry, reminding the owner of the human hand behind the chisel.
