What knows before thought?

Before you decide to see, seeing is already happening. Before you try to hear, sound is already heard. And before you deliberately create a thought, thought has already appeared.

WHAT KNOWS BEFORE THOUGHT? presents 101 gates pointing directly to the mind that is already seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing before thought divides experience into “self” and “world.”

Drawing on Zen Buddhism and Mahayana teachings, Chunhwan Lim explores the True Self, Buddha-Nature, Original Mind, no-mind, non-discrimination, impermanence, and the One Mind—not as abstract doctrines to be believed, but as experiences that can be examined directly in ordinary life.

Each gate offers a different way of looking. Readers are invited not simply to understand the words intellectually, but to check them in seeing, hearing, feeling, thinking, relationships, anger, love, and everyday action.

The final gates return awakening to ordinary life: listening to another person, apologizing when wrong, extending a hand when someone is hurting, and acting with compassion without creating a separate self who claims the act.

You do not need to pass through all 101 gates. One gate, truly seen, may be enough.
