You learned that Saturn is bad news.

And then you looked at your own chart, found Saturn sitting somewhere important, and felt something drop.

Most beginner astrology gives you a list. Saturn restricts. Jupiter expands. Mars is anger. Learn the list, apply the list, feel vaguely doomed about half of it.

That is not how the ancients worked, and it is not how charts actually behave.

What this book does differently

I came to traditional astrology after eight years in modern astrology. I loved what I learned there, but I struggled to produce readings that were consistent, and I struggled hardest with fate and free will.

Hellenistic astrology gave me the consistency I was missing. It also asked me to sit with material that reads harshly on the page. What I found, over years of reading charts, is that the tradition is more precise than modern astrology and less deterministic than it first appears, if you learn to read condition properly.

This book teaches the tradition faithfully. Where my own observation departs from it, I say so plainly, and I show you the chart that changed my mind.

You are not asked to believe any of it. You are asked to observe yourself.

What you will be able to do

Read the seven traditional planets as processes rather than keywords: what each one does, not what it "means"

Determine the sect of any chart, and understand why an out-of-sect malefic behaves so differently from an in-sect one

Find the ruler of the chart and trace it through the houses it rules, the habit that separates a reader from a keyword-matcher

Assess planetary condition by sign, and know what it does and does not tell you

Calculate the Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit by hand

Write a basic chart analysis using only what this book teaches
