Byzantine Empire. Justin I (AD 518-527). Tremissis
The tremissis was a small gold coin used in the Byzantine Empire, equivalent to a third of a solidus. The tremissis minted under Emperor Justin I, who ruled from AD 518 to 527, represents the continued Roman imperial tradition carried on at Constantinople after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Justin I's reign saw efforts to consolidate and stabilize the empire, as well as religious and legal reforms. Byzantine coinage during this period typically combined Christian symbolism with imperial imagery, reflecting the empire’s synthesis of classical Roman legacy and Christian identity. Tremisses were part of a sophisticated monetary system that supported commerce and state finances.
