Icon - Many Panels Icon with Kovcheg - Wood

A Many Panels Icon with Kovcheg is a traditional religious artwork commonly found in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Icons are sacred images depicting holy figures, saints, or biblical scenes, often painted on wood panels. The term 'Many Panels' indicates a multi-paneled structure, also called a polyptych, which allows for a rich narrative through several related holy depictions presented together. A Kovcheg, meaning 'ark' or 'chest' in Russian, refers to a protective or decorative case or housing used for such icons, sometimes intricately carved or gilded to enhance reverence and preservation. These wooden icons have deep spiritual significance, used in both private devotion and church liturgy, embodying centuries-old artistic traditions and theological symbolism. Their study offers insight into religious art, craftsmanship, and the cultural heritage of Orthodox Christian communities.
