Icon - Wood - Icon with nine panels.
An icon with nine panels carved or painted on wood typically serves a religious function, especially within Orthodox Christianity. Such icons feature sacred images arranged in a grid, often depicting saints, biblical scenes, or Christological themes. Wood is the traditional material for icon panels, providing a durable yet workable surface for tempera paints and gilding. The nine-panel format allows for a narrative or thematic exploration, making the icon a focal point for devotion and prayer. These pieces hold both spiritual and artistic significance, reflecting centuries-old devotional practices and iconographic conventions.
