Mask - Ngil - Fang - Cameroon
This Ngil mask originates from the Fang people of Cameroon and is notable in Central African art history. The Ngil society, mainly a male initiation and judicial group, used these masks during ceremonies to embody ancestor spirits and enforce social order. Characterized by their striking white face, elongated features, and sometimes horn-like protrusions, these masks are carved from wood and finished with kaolin or other white pigments. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Ngil masks functioned as powerful symbols with spiritual and social authority, reflecting the complex cultural structures of the Fang and their artistic expression.
