Roman Empire. Philip I, Extremely Rare; only 1 recorded example on OCRE. Antoninianus AD 248
Philip I, known as Philip the Arab, was Roman Emperor from AD 244 to 249 during a period of instability and frequent regime changes. The Antoninianus coinage issued under his reign is particularly notable for rarity in some types, such as the extremely rare example referenced here, recorded only once on the Online Coins of the Roman Empire (OCRE) database. The Antoninianus was a silver coin introduced by Caracalla, initially valued at two denarii, but debased over time. Coins bearing Philip’s image reflect political messaging and imperial authority during a troubled era marked by conflicts and economic difficulties.
