Roman Empire. Valerian II (+AD 258). Antoninianus - PIETAS AVGG (No reserve price)
Valerian II, son of Emperor Valerian, was a young Roman prince who died around AD 258 during a tumultuous period for the empire. The Antoninianus bearing the inscription 'PIETAS AVGG' emphasizes the virtue of pietas, meaning duty, loyalty, and religious devotion, especially toward the emperor and the gods. Antoniniani like this silver coin were commonly issued to disseminate imperial propaganda and to support military expenditures. Although Valerian II never ruled independently, coins issued in his name contribute to understanding the imperial family’s efforts to legitimize succession during mid-3rd century crises.
