Tantalus Bleikristall - Wine rack - Crystal, Ormolu - Acanthus leaf decorations

A Tantalus is a traditional, often decorative, wine or spirit rack designed to securely hold bottles, typically made from crystal and ormolu, which is gilded bronze. This particular Tantalus features acanthus leaf decorations, a classic ornamental motif derived from ancient Greek and Roman art symbolizing enduring life and elegance. The combination of crystal and ormolu materials speaks to luxury and craftsmanship, with crystal often being hand-cut to refract light beautifully while ormolu adds a rich golden accent. Historically, a Tantalus served the dual function of storing fine bottles and protecting them from unauthorized use, often featuring a locking mechanism. Such pieces are prized for their artistic value, reflecting 19th or early 20th-century European decorative arts traditions, merging practicality with ornamental appeal.
