Your Book of Shadows: How to Write Your Own Magickal Spells (Wicca for Beginners & Adepts 2)
Your Book of Shadows: How to Write Your Own Magickal Spells
Wizards and witches throughout history have valued their spellbooks. Far more than a simple compilation of mystical recipes for love, health, prosperity, and other daily needs, the spellbook preserved tradition, assembled personal insights, provided instructions, and collected good advice into one neat package. In other words, a good spellbook included everything necessary to walk the Path of Beauty wisely, skillfully, and confidently.
So, why do many ancient spellbooks seem so enigmatic and distasteful? For several reasons. First, bear in mind the time periods during which these spellbooks originated. During those years, many of the supposed magical accounts were written by people seeking to destroy Wiccan beliefs. These people would “make up” spells and rituals that talked of heinous procedures to scare the public and provide ammunition for ostracization.
Second, many occult practitioners in the past believed that there was a limited amount of energy available to them. So, if a lot of people worked magic, there would be less power in it. In an effort to avoid this problem, they safeguarded basic procedures by hiding them in nonsense words and actions that had little meaning to the uninitiated, or someone who didn’t understand the writer’s code.
Throughout this book Patricia Telesco offers excerpts from her own Book of Shadows as well as those from friends who have kindly given her permission to share the methods that they have found. You can use these to begin your own book or adapt them as desired. See, this process requires that you follow your heart: magic begins with our will and desire, but it’s guided by vision. So, think of this book like a black-and-white outline to which you bring the crayons of insight and imagination to design a Book of Shadows that is completely right for your magical path.
In some ways your Book of Shadows will never be “done” because magic is a lifelong journey that continually awakens and augments our spiritual nature. Even so, once you have the basics of your spellbook completed, it will be something you return to again and again for help and inspiration. Your Book of Shadows will also be a tome that you’ll want to share, in part, with close friends and people of a like mind. Sharing what we’ve learned or discovered builds respect for various paths, helps internalize the lessons you’re talking about, and encourages an open exchange of ideas from which everyone benefits.
So, sit down with Your Book of Shadows: How to Write Your Own Magickal Spells and begin the work on your own magickal tome. By the time you’re done, you’ll have developed a very special magical book all your own—a book to be proud of, and one to treasure for many years to come.
